The good news is that I'm farther behind on this blog than I am in exercising.  I'm starting to get my mojo back, I think.  Good thing!  Warrior Dash is 3 weeks from Saturday.

214.34 Miles in 2010

2.93 miles on Towne Lake Trail with Kellsey yesterday morning. Technically, it's a 5K loop, but since I've always measured with my Nike+ on here, I will keep with it. We did 5/1.5 run/walk intervals. Despite using my inhaler before the run, I was still wheezing. Darn. I'll blame it on being outside in Austin.

I will update with a Nike+ graph when I get home and synced.

2.01 miles tonight on the treadmill. I forgot to do my inhaler until I was pretty much done with my warm-up, and it showed. Wheezing city! Must remember to give it some lead time to work.

Oh, and I rested yesterday. Needed it.

Shorter runs on the home treadmill yesterday and today. I'd like to do two more short runs Wed and Thurs, rest Friday, then have my run with Kells on Saturday. Maybe shorter-but-more-frequent will work better for me? I don't know, but I just want to keep on running!

201.56 Miles in 2010

Busted 200, yea! It's hard for me not to also notice that I am about 35 miles behind pace, though.

Anyway, 2.29 miles outside on the trail today. We had a nice cool front blow through with some rain and sub-80 degree temperatures. It's heavenly outside. I'm still struggling with the wheezing. My legs want to do more while my aerobic system is gasping for air. Hopefully this will get better if I just keep pounding on it. Something is better than nothing.

I had hoped I'd be able to run Kellsey's 5k loop with her in a couple of weeks when I am in Austin, but there will likely be walking involved. Sorry, Kells. =( Stupid upper respiratory infection!

My new running skirt was awesome for the outside run! I had my Guardian Angel in one pocket and my ipod in the other with my earbuds snaked through the hole for that purpose. Awesome! This is also the first time since I've had my Road ID that I've "needed" it (i.e., not on a treadmill).

194.49 Miles in 2010

Yea, an update! I did 2.24 miles today at the Rec. I am getting over 2 weeks of sickness, ending with a sinus infection and probably strep throat. Both boys were sick, too.

It was harder to bounce back than I anticipated. It was all I could do to make it through a 10-minute run at 5.5. I walked the rest. Hopefully, the climb back up won't be as long or difficult as getting there the first time.

Also! I had received a coupon on a new running skirt, including free shipping and returns... risk free! I bought a Gym Girl Ultra and ran in it for the first time today. LOVE. The inseam is longer than my current skirts, and they didn't move an inch. There are also great pockets and a hole for my earphone cord for when I'm not on the treadmill.

183.78 Miles in 2010

2.28 miles today at the Rec... where the A/C was broken. I was dripping with sweat after the end of my 5-minute warm-up walk! I cut it short at 15 minutes of running at 5.3, then just walked to cool down until the 30-minute mark. The run felt great besides the sweat! Maybe I can get some more miles in tomorrow, since I don't think I will have too tired legs from this.

(Isn't it great that 15 minutes at 5.3 is a light day now?)

Nike+ Graph

Also, I got a sweet comment from Kellsey saying how hard it is to keep going on a treadmill, etc. Girl, I don't even want to stand outside, so I don't see how you're running 10k's in it. Thank Goodness there are different methods available to go with our different weaknesses!

181.50 Miles in 2010

Last night, I decided for a long walk vs. a short run on my treadmill. I wanted to watch Wednesday's SYTYCD, so I pretty much walked for the hour and 10 minutes it took me to watch it for 3.71 miles. My hips feel more worked out than they have in a long time, so I guess it's good to mix things up.

3.43 miles at the Rec this afternoon. I had to push on this one, but I did! I ended up running at 5.3 for 25 minutes.

It's amazing how quickly I have fallen back on my mile-a-day pace. I was within 4 miles of reaching that pace at one time, and now I am over 16 miles off! Yikes. I need to get back to working out 3x per week.

2.89 miles on my home treadmill today. I am just not feeling it this week. Plus, I think we need to calibrate the treadmill somehow. I'm staying with Nike+ as the source of record, but it's frustrating not to know what's right.

WW Update

I was thinking of discontinuing my WW Online membership, but I think I will keep it for a while longer. I'm not very committed to staying within my weekly points lately... vacation really got me off track! I feel like I've made some good trades at home, and I'm more aware of what I'm eating. I might actually do better with the accountability of meetings, but that's also not how I want to use my free time if I have it!

I'm down to 146.2, which means I've lost more than 10 lbs since I started. I was actually surprised I hadn't gained after the past three weeks of eating, so I'll take it! My Wii Fit seems to think my ideal BMI is 22.0, and I'll hit that at 140 lbs. We'll see when I get there. All I know is that I was in my bathing suit all day yesterday, and I was only self-conscious a few times. I'll take that, too.

159.29 Miles in 2010

2.47 miles tonight on my new (to me) treadmill! I decided to go with the Horizon T81 I found on Craig's List rather than pay twice as much for a new one. That way, if I've made a bad decision and need to upgrade some day, I don't have too much in it. The guy that owns the second-hand place with the scratch and dent deals (new) said he'd call me if they get anything great.

It's a little bigger in our room than I expected it to be, but it will work. We just need to get used to it. There is one other way we can arrange things if we need to try something different. I have my old 19" tv in there with our old DirecTiVo (non-HD). I had no idea what would be on the TiVo, but there were a bunch of Mentalists, a show I haven't kept up with. I might see if I can get some TV on DVD to watch. Meanwhile, I'm also pricing out 32" flat screens. =)

Anyway, I wasn't really feeling the run tonight, but it was nice to have means for a good indoor walk!

137.49 Miles in 2010

3.26 miles this morning in my first 5k ever! Yeah, Nike+ gave me a little more credit than the race course. Who to believe? I'll put checking the calibration on my list of things to do.

Anyway, the race was fun. I got there about 45 minutes early and just wandered around. I made sure to use the porta potty per LauraC's advice. I lined up toward the back of the pack, but I ended up needing to pass a bunch of people to really hit my stride. The course was 2.5k out, then a turn-around. As soon as I turned around, I realized we would be into the wind (and it was windy!) all the way back. Yikes! There was also an uphill section right before the 3 mile marker. Double yikes! If I had not been in the race, I would have definitely allowed for some walking. You can see how crazy up-and-down my pace was on my Nike+ graph.

My boys were waiting for me near the end! I definitely looked forward to seeing them cheer me on!

My official time was 33'26". My goals had been no walking and under 35 minutes, but in reality, I'd hoped to be closer to 30 minutes than I was. I blame the wind. =)

I picked up my race packet yesterday. There wasn't really any information about the race itself: just my number, timing thingy and stuff from the sponsors. They did give us a running shirt with the logo on it. LauraC recommended not wearing anything new at the race itself. I ran in it this morning, and she's right. I prefer my sleeveless shirts. Luckily, my other running skirt has a bit longer inseam, so no chub rub!

I was sad to miss out on the March for Babies (5 miles) Saturday morning, but AJC woke up with a fever. Boo! So tonight was an unplanned workout. As such, of course, it was raining and the Rec Center is closed on Sunday. So I did a free pass to the 24Hour Fitness. Pretty amazing to have all of those facilities... there weren't any sales people there tonight, but I may go try to strike a deal some time this week. Tonight, though. Holy cow this was good. And a total of 3.5 WW points. With the points I saved, I am going to go have a glass of wine!

151 Pounds

File this under "that can't be right," but I lost almost 5 lbs last week. I must have been really bloated or something last Monday when I weighed in at 156.

The scale at the gym is weighing me heavier, but the Wii Fit is the official scale of record so I'm sticking with it for now. I may have to re-think my position on a home scale, though, since it's such a production to boot the Fit just for a weigh in.

I unofficially started Weight Watchers Online last Wednesday. For the first week, I mainly just wanted to see where I was. What I found was that I can eliminate a lot of WW point by limiting to diet drinks (yuk) and unsweet tea (yum). Just the act of tracking everything that went in my mouth kept me from several grazing instances.

I'm hungry and grumpy, though, so something else needs to be adjusted.

I don't know why I can do it inside and not out, but I'll take what I can get for now. I want to master this before I get frustrated by changing it up.

72.80 Miles in 2010

Just mostly walked 2.03 miles out on the trail behind the house.

The Good:
  • I did something.
  • It's a gorgeous day.
  • So far, it seems like my new insole is helping. Then again, I just walked, so YMMV.
  • My mini-me isn't playing paddleball anymore.
The Bad:
  • Why do I suck outside? I can't even breathe! Seriously - why such a difference from inside aerobically?
  • The longest I ran was 2 minutes.
  • It was still pretty muddy from all of the melting snow from 24 hours ago (CRAZY!)

Sick

I am just ON HOLD! Not DERAILED!

I'm going to pick back up with the first workout of Week 5 just as soon as I can function as a normal human being again. Hopefully Monday; expecting Tuesday.

70.77 Miles in 2010

I did the first workout of Week 5 last night, which consists of three intervals of run 5 minutes/walk 3 minutes. The last run was a challenge, but no huge deal.

The bigger issue right now seems to be my right leg. I'm not loving how my right shoe fits or my form on that side is screwy or something. I've started getting a shin splint on that side and the inside of my right knee is getting more sore with each workout. I'm not sure how to address this - head to the running store for analysis???

I did some of my walking at 4.0 and ran at 4.8.

C25K Week 5

I start Week 5 this week, and I am more than a little intimidated. This Saturday, I should be running 20 minutes straight. Yikes!

I'm still sore/tired from last Saturday's run, but I think I've just got an overall funk. There seems to be a super-mild flu going around at daycare, and I think I've got it. I refuse to get derailed, though!

68.30 Miles in 2010

Week 4 down! I added 3 minutes of running at the end of the intervals, and my legs are tiiiiiiired.

65.45 Miles in 2010

2.62 miles this morning for Week 4, Day 2. Running for 5 minutes is still hard - I catch myself checking the clock at 4 minutes. At least then there's only a minute left!

I acknowledge that running on the treadmill is much easier than running outside for me. I find it easier to focus, easier to balance, easier to hit a stride. Have I mentioned my balance issues before? I use my eyes to balance. If I close them or block them by taking a drink, etc., I'm all over the place. If I'm on the treadmill that doesn't directly face the TV, I can't look at it. I think this is one of the reasons I'm doing so much better inside than out: I can just point 'em forward and run!

Nike+ graph

(Since Tuesday's run was outside Nike+, my mini me was playing video games and paddleball for the first time - sad! At least I knew it wasn't because I had really missed a workout.)

62.83 Miles in 2010

Argh. Forgot to plug my Nike+ sensor back into my ipod after syncing, and I didn't realize it until I was on the treadmill.

I bumped up to Week 4 today, and it was hard. But I DID IT. I gave myself an extra 30 seconds to walk before the last 5 minute run, but I think that's probably ok. =)

Still walking at 3.9 and running at 4.8.

60.33 Miles in 2010

Went to the Rec this morning after delivering Charlie and Luke back to Katie. Glad I fit it in then, because I have been sidelined by a piercing headache since then. I did Week 3 intervals + 5 minutes running on the back end. Bumping up to Week 4 next time, though!

57.75 Miles in 2010

Today I snuck to the Rec at lunchtime and did c25k Week 3 again. After running the intervals, I ran for 5 minutes straight! Go me! I felt much better today. I like the lunchtime window if I can pull it off.

55.13 Miles in 2010

Bryan made it home by 7:30-ish last night, so I was able to leave the house and go to the Rec. I bumped up to c25k Week 3 and did 2.57 miles. I didn't feel great - just meh. But I did it.

After the Week 3 intervals, I ran another 2.5 minutes, then walked for quite a while. What can I say? The Bachelor finale was on, and I got sucked in. I think the lady on the eliptical beside me was only there for the TV, because she was barely moving it. She was more just swinging her feet back and forth - LOL!

52.56 Miles in 2010

2.87 miles on the treadmill at the Rec this morning! I was the first one there, so I got my pick of machines today. I did c25k Week 2, then ran for 4 minutes (!), walked 2.5 minutes, ran 2.5 minutes, walked 5 minutes. I'll move up to Week 3 next time.

Walked at 3.9
Ran at 4.8

It really takes me a while to feel good on the runs. The early ones are definitely the hardest.

View on the Treadmill

I've never really used a treadmill before. Here you can see (from left to right) my water, sweat towel provided by the rec, yellow sticky of the Week 2 intervals by time, ipod with Nike+ and my blackberry. I'm really liking the treadmill so far!

49.69 Miles in 2010

I felt like a total rock star after working out today. First, I totally didn't have time to go, but I did it anyway. Second, I had a headache, but I did it anyway. Third, I didn't have to wait for a treadmill at all. Fourth, I did good, y'all.

I went ahead and jumped ahead to c25k Week 2 today since Week 1 seemed pretty easy on Tuesday. After finishing the intervals, I just ran to see how long I could (then pushed to the next round number 'cause that's how I'm wired), and I made it 4 minutes! I know that doesn't sound long, but I am super-proud of myself. =)

47.22 Miles in 2010

I went to the Rec at lunch, and it was packed! It cleared out by around 12, so next time I'll go then. Since the treadmills were full, I started with 3.5 miles on the bike (= 1 challenge mile). Then I got on the treadmill and did Couch to 5K Week1 plus for 2.12 miles.

Here's the link to my Nike+ graph. I don't know why it doesn't show the intervals more clearly. I was switching between 3.8 (walk) and 4.7 (run).

Edited to say I fixed it. Thanks, Laura!

44.1 Miles in 2010

This morning, I went and joined the Rec Center in our town. Every time we check out a new service of the PARD, we are impressed, and today was no different. My fees for the year are $60, and if Bryan decides to join, it's only another $45. The downsides are that it is closed on Sunday and has no childcare. 24-Hour Fitness may get me, yet!

I had to wait for one of the three treadmills (cute old people walking!), so I did 2 miles (~.6 challenge miles) on the bike to warm up. Once my turn, I did the following:

Walk .25 miles
Nike+ Walk calibration for 0.5 miles
Nike+ Run calibration for 0.25 miles
..
3 intervals of:
Walk 0.25 miles
Run 0.25 miles
..
Walk 0.5 miles

For a total of 3 treadmill miles. Plus the .6 from the bike is 3.6 challenge miles.

Phone Photo Friday

How about a Phone Photo Friday over here?

My Nike+ secured in a baggie until I get my laces sleeve.

And again after two very muddy walks

Can I wash my running shoes without ruining them? Dry them?

40.5 Miles in 2010

Ok, so I figured out what I was doing wrong on the trail the other day. There are "points of interest" along the trail clearly marked with "1" and "2." Only those aren't the mile markers. *sigh* So Nike+ is giving me extra credit today because I calibrated it wrong yesterday.

I actually walked 2.5 miles today. And boy, was it windy! And muddy!

I should get my Nike+ laces sock before Saturday (next planned workout day), so I'll just wait on the calibration until then.

38 Miles in 2010

So I tried out my new Nike+ today. I tried to calibrate it by walking 1 mile on the trail that runs behind my house, but I don't think it worked right. According to the trail markers, I went 2 miles out, and 2 miles back (hence giving myself credit for 4 miles). According to Nike+, I did the 1-mile calibration, then another 2.01 miles. Oh, and I walked today.

I'm gonna have to find a treadmill.

I'm also going to have to work tonight, because I am spending too much time figuring out all the Nike+ stuff. I'm "lotsa98" as usual. Find me!

Edited to change to 2 miles of credit. See next post. Duh.

36 Miles in 2010

My Valentine worked all day, so I was able to squeeze in my 3 miles tonight (miles 5, 1, and 2). I am getting bored with this video and am ready to re-tackle c25k! I'll save this video as my "didn't get it done during the day so have to do something at home at night" backup plan.

After much hemming and hawing, I did spend the rest of my birthday money on a Nike + this weekend. Dick's was out of them (!), so I had to go to the Apple store. I HATE going to the Apple store. Hope it's worth it! I need to get a laces sleeve since my shoes are Addidas. I also need to hook the desktop back up to the internet (took apart my office to paint a couple of weeks ago), since that is the computer that has itunes. Maybe by the time I get all of these things done it will be warm enough for this Texas girl to get outside and run? (34-ish this morning... brr!)

Oh, and my ankle stayed a little sore after last Wednesday, so the extra rest was good. I also wore shoes (my old Sauconys) for the workout. I think it's the side-to-side motion without shoes that's bothering me. The shoes are not good cross-trainers, but I think it was better than nothing.

33 Miles in 2010

3 Walk-at-Home miles (2, 3, and 4) tonight. My left ankle is a little unhappy with me, but nothing too bad. I followed up the miles with 30 crunches and 30 butt-lifts (yes, that's a technical term!).

Then I sat on said butt and watched some TV! Woot for not working tonight!

30 Miles in 2010

3 Walk-at-Home miles tonight (miles, 4, 5, and 1). I also weighed-in on the Wii Fit, and I was essentially the same as two weeks ago (155 lbs).

And this is why it can't be about the numbers for me. It has to be about how I feel. Part of how I feel is how I look, but I really feel like that will take care of itself if I just keep going on a healthier track.

27 Miles in 2010

Let's just push that on down the page, shall we?

2 Walk-at-Home miles tonight (miles 2 & 3). My legs are tired. I can't decide if it's from doing 4 miles on Sunday or just PMS. =)

Overall, I'm feeling healthier already, and that is awesome.

BEFORE

So, this is not fun! At all!

I'm starting this year at roughly 155 lbs. By all measures I've seen, that's on the high end of normal for my height based on weight on BMI. I'm actually not in this whole "get in better shape" kick for the weight loss. If that happens... fabulous! But I really just need to be able to be in better shape and healthier. And I like my daily Dr. Pepper and weekly Taco Bueno.

I never want to be that girl that worries about little fluctuations in my weight. To that end, the only scale in our house is the Wii Fit. I had a friend recently freak out about 0.8 lbs of gain (!), and I honestly find that attitude kind of ugly. And if I know my husband at all, he would, too.

Speaking of my husband, right after he took these pictures for me, he said, "I love how you look." He's not perfect, but he got that one right!

Anyway, I have a thin frame. All of my fat (besides my face and upper arms) is in my belly and upper-upper thighs. I have very skinny legs, otherwise. So while 155 isn't "fat," I think it looks fat on me. It's all about distribution, right? And for historical perspective, I graduated high school at about 125 and got married at 135. I think 135-ish would be perfectly reasonable.

(I miss my nursing b00bs!) (And yes, that is a nursing bra, why do you ask?)

25 Miles in 2010

Four (!) walk-at-home miles tonight. I copied London's method and put the DVD on our portable DVD player so I could watch something on the TiVo. I tried watching the series finale of Dollhouse, but I discovered that I couldn't concentrate on both. I watched a House repeat instead. Anyway, it passed the time better, and I stuck it out for the 4th mile.

I'm not planning to make a habit of leaving a workout until Sunday night, but I lost a lot of opportunities this week. I love that I was looking forward to finding an opportunity!

21 Miles in 2010

I did 3 Walk-at-Home miles tonight. (Miles 1, 2, and 3) They are definitely getting easier!

I still do want to try the running outside thing. It just got cold again, so I'm going to wait until it's a bit more consistent. Bryan is going to outfit me with a GPS so I can map out some distances on the trail behind our house. There are mile markers, but our house is between 3/4 and Mile 1. So I just need to measure to a mile marker, then do some math!

Ironman Watch with iControl

I bought myself a present. Woot featured the Timex Ironman iControl watches last week for $30, and I got this blue one. Pretty!

I have long since lost my old Ironman watch from high school/college, including my "The Band" from Kanakuk. Sad! So I snatched up this watch when I saw it - $30 was a good price point for me.

And guess what? It can remotely control your ipod.

When I was doing my c25k runs, I was holding my ipod. No need! Now I can just strap it somewhere and control things from this watch. I'm even thinking that I'll just use the interval timers to time the c25k walk/runs, and just listen to my own music.

18 Miles in 2010

3 Walk-at-Home miles over lunch today. I did miles 2, 3, and 5.

I am debating a weekly weigh-in and "before" picture. (yeesh). But how cool is it to see your own before and after... AFTER? Check out Maria - amazing!

Sunday, January 24, 2010

15 Miles in 2010

3 more walk-at-home miles tonight. I did miles 3, 4, and 5. My legs are feeling strong!

That means I met my goal of 9 miles last week (Monday - Sunday). I am on the verge of being able to do more. Maybe I will get to 500 miles this year after all?

I have also been taking a new generic multi-vitamin that seems to be working better for me than the women's versions I have been taking. Too much iron just makes me ill. Even though I always tend toward anemia. Go figure!

Thursday, January 21, 2010

12 miles in 2010

3 more Walk-at-Home miles during lunch today. I did miles 1, 4 and 5 - my first time to do mile 5. As it turns out, there is a cool down after all! I wondered about that. I wish they had made it separately available on the menu, but that's ok. I'll just try to end with mile 5 from now on.

My legs were tired after the last time, so I took two days off. That, and I had a headache last night. My goal seems to be solidifying into 9 miles/week. I can definitely be happy with that fitness level. I don't know how this is going to affect weight loss, but I'll jump off that bridge at another time. For now, it's good to be doing this!

Monday, January 18, 2010

9 Miles in 2010

3 Walk at Home miles tonight!

I was much more tired this time. It's nice how each mile is it's own little cycle of low, medium, and high intensity - you kind of get a break after each high bit!

Saturday, January 16, 2010

6 Miles in 2010

Three Walk-at-Home miles tonight!

And LauraC let me know that there are a few people signed up to do 350 miles in 2010, so I committed to that!

Friday, January 15, 2010

3 Miles in 2010

So I haven't decided if I am going to commit to 500 miles in 2010 - I may have to do the JV version. =) But I've decided to title the posts with my cumulative miles for the year so far.

London had mentioned that she was doing some walk-at-home videos, so I watched some snippets on YouTube and decided to pick one up. (On sale at Target for $10!) Dude - it's not just walking. It's like going to an aerobics class.

Anyway, I did 2 miles last night. I'll do 3 next time.

Catching Up

So mostly I've been sick or pigging out for the holidays since I last posted. After that last really inspiring post, I did get moving again... until I got sick. (Excuses, excuses!)

11/22/09 - c25k Week 1 run
11/26/09 - c25k Week 1 run
...
...
...
1/13/2010 - 2000 steps (~1 mile) Wii Fit free step (I still weighed about the same as last time.)

I need a plan. It needs to be flexible, but I need a starting point. For now, I'm just trying to get back into the "do SOMETHING" mindset.

Here are my options, as I currently see them:
  1. morning - relies on Bryan taking the boys to daycare so I can be working by 9 or so. Lately, I've been taking the boys a lot or going back to sleep to make it through the day. Or, you know, showering.
  2. lunch - I'm HUNGRY at lunch! This would take planning a mid-morning snack substantial enough to last through a workout. Then a lunch I could eat at my desk.
  3. night - needs to be after the boys are in bed and at home. Again with where do I fit in eating?
